Marshall Brewer, Director

With over 34 years in intercultural education, Marshall Brewer brings multiple perspectives to INTERLINK as Executive Director. He is a presenting member of 12 professional associations of language teachers, including Japan, Korea, and Spain. He has twice served as vice president of the International Society for Intercultural Education, Training, and Research. From SIT Graduate Institute he holds two degrees, the M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and the Master of Intercultural Administration. Previous to INTERLINK, he worked in many capacities for World Learning, the nonprofit international education organization and taught English language at Greenfield Community College. He has worked and traveled in Europe, Central America and the Caribbean, and East Asia. He speaks German and Swedish and has studied French, Spanish, Thai, and Turkish.

Shaima Shahbaz, Assistant Director

A native of the Denver area, Shaima Shahbaz has a background in international development. In 2008 she volunteered as a project manager for the nonprofit Afghans4Tomorrow in Afghanistan and was inspired to continue her studies at the U.N. University for Peace in San Jose, Costa Rica. With an M.A. in Responsible Management she then worked with the nonprofit BeadforLife doing research and project management in rural Uganda. As a project manager for INTERLINK, she enjoys working on a variety of projects as needed by directors.

liza-fate Elizabeth Fate, Instructor

Elizabeth (Liza) has been an instructor with INTERLINK Language Centers since 2012. She taught for three years at the INTERLINK Center at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and one year with an INTERLINK program in Saudi Arabia. She is happy to now be teaching in her home state of Iowa. Liza received her MA in TESOL from the SIT Graduate Institute in Brattleboro, Vermont. She completed her BA in Modern Languages, including a study abroad experience in Spain, and has since had many experiences working with people of diverse backgrounds. In addition to teaching with INTERLINK, other experiences include: teaching at a preschool for children of homeless families in Washington, DC, working at a public school in Iowa, and interning at an Intensive English Program in Massachusetts. Liza enjoys teaching at INTERLINK for its commitment to student-centered learning and its authentic approach to successfully preparing students for academic life in the US.

  Allison Kerr, Administrative Assistant

Allison (Alli) is native to Eastern Iowa and has strong roots in the Quad Cities. She graduated from St. Ambrose University in May 2017 and gained experience working with international students while working at the Center for International Education at SAU. Having recently graduated from St. Ambrose, Alli is excited to share her knowledge of SAU and the Quad Cities with INTERLINK students. She has volunteered two years of AmeriCorps service working with at-risk youth in the Quad Cities. This experience, as well as her studies at St. Mary’s University in Twickenham, London, have sparked Alli’s passion for culture and service. Alli enjoys connecting students to various resources to ensure they get the most out of their time in the INTERLINK program and at SAU. Alli appreciates INTERLINK’s unique, holistic approach to education and its dedication to their students’ success beyond the INTERLINK program.
